Getting started with watercolors can be intimidating. Adding to the pressure is the idea that watercolor is too complex and difficult. Honestly, it can be just that! However, don’t let that keep you from starting. Don’t let obstacles rob you of making that first attempt. Beginners are a bit tough on themselves. So don’t be. Everything worth doing takes time. Don’t take watercolors so seriously. Not every painting has to be a work of art. Try some exercises and play with your paints. Practice is essential. Try to carve out 15-20 minutes daily or at least 30 minutes on the weekends. The more you paint, the better you will get.
Watercolor requires simple supplies, and they can be very inexpensive. That’s a big help in the beginning when you’re not sure you are committed yet. You just need a small set of watercolor paints, decent watercolor paper and a few brushes.
Watercolor transparency is crucial. Painting in layers creates a more realistic rendering. In the beginning practice layering your paint and observing how that adds or changes the already painted surface. Use varying amounts of water to see just what will happen. Water control is crucial so experimenting and learning what happens when you use a little water or a lot of water will help you improve. Work in big shapes first. Start by blocking in the largest shapes using very light, watered down colors. Then add more color as you apply each layer. Always paint from light to dark. Lay in the details last. Paint quickly as watercolor tends to dry out fast. So, buy some supplies and let’s get started on this watercolor journey! Happy painting!
